Description
Overview
Using empathy focuses on the client’s core message, key experiences, key behaviors, and key emotions. One of the main challenges for helping professionals is to understand how to put empathic understanding into words. The ability to successfully communicate empathy can be one of the most powerful tools a helping professional has in the helping setting. It creates a helping environment where the client feels understood. According to Egan and Reese (2019), basic empathic understanding can be expressed in the following formula:
You feel . . . [here name the correct emotion expressed by the client] because . . . [here indicate the correct experiences, thoughts, and behaviors that give rise to the feelings]. (p. 138)
In this assignment, you will be asked to use the formula identified in the readings this week to create an empathic response for presented case studies. When creating an empathic response, you will want to apply the following steps:
Begin by identifying the key experiences, behaviors, and feelings and emotions presented in the case study.
Formulate an empathic response.
Assignment Instructions
Read the cases in the Using a Formula to Communicate Empathy Worksheet (linked in the Resources). For each of the three cases, identify the key experiences, behaviors, and feelings. Then, use the formula to construct an empathic response. Record all of your work in the worksheet.
Once you have completed the worksheet, submit it in the assignment area by the designated deadline.

USING A FORMULA TO COMMUNICATE EMPATHY
EXAMPLE 1
A young girl in a peer support group at school is talking about her relationship with her boyfriend.
YOUNG GIRL:
“About a couple of months ago, he began being abusive-calling me names, describing my defects. To tell you the truth, that’s why I joined this group, but I haven’t had the courage to talk about it until now. The couple of times I’ve tried to stand up for myself, he become even more abusive. He hasn’t hit me or anything but, anyway. So I’ve been just taking it, just sitting and taking it…..like a dog or something. Do you think that this is just his bizarre way of getting rid of me? Why doesn’t he just tell me?”
KEY EXPERIENCE
The Key Experience in this example is the girl being abused by a companion and the escalation in abuse.
KEY FEELINGS
The Key Behavior is the girl trying to stand up for herself, becoming passive, trying to figure out if this is his way of getting rid of her.
EMPATHETIC RESPONSE
You feel angry and confused because the abuse came from out of the blue, and now you’re wondering whether this is just his strange way of ending the relationship.
USING A FORMULA TO COMMUNICATE EMPATHY
Now it is your time to practice. Following the previous template, identify the key experiences, behavior and/or feelings for the following case. Then translate what you have heard into an empathetic response.
EXAMPLE 2
A first-year college student is talking to a counselor at the Center for Student Services. She has been talking about some of the difficulties of adjusting to college life. She comes from a small town and is attending a large state university. She speaks openly and seems to be in good spirits; she even smiles at times:
COLLEGE STUDENT:
“My friend seems so much more sophisticated than I am. Just the other night, Maiead and Johanna showed up at the party with party dresses and with dates. And there I was, alone and in jeans! I mean, just typical of me!….I guess I am more amazed than embarrassed. And I did have a good time anyway. It’s like I have to learn a whole new set of rules, but nobody just comes out and says what they are.”
USING A FORMULA TO COMMUNICATE EMPATHY

Using a Formula to Communicate Empathy Worksheet
The purpose of this assignment is for you to use the formula presented in the readings this week to construct an empathic response. For each of the the three cases below, identify the key experiences, behaviors, and feelings or emotions. Use the empathy formula from the reading to construct an empathic response.
Once you have completed the worksheet, submit it in the assignment area by the designated deadline.
Case 1:
I met my first wife in high school, and we got married just after high school, when she was three months pregnant. We got divorced when my older son was five years old, and I got together with my second wife about a year later. That marriage didn’t last long either, about six months, because she was a drug abuser and liked to hang at the bars. I’ve been married to my present wife for five years, but we were together for about two years before that, so she’s been around my kids for quite a while.
