Ethical principles as it were, are intended to guide and motivate psychologists towards attaining ethical ideals of the profession.
The ACA and APA have code of ethics such as beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, justice, and fidelity that guides them in
carrying out their professional discipline. After reviewing the ACA and APA code of ethics, as a health professional, l am bound to
follow the principle of beneficence or doing good by making sure that clients are not hurt in anyway while carrying out my
professional duty. In other words, l am duty bound by the principle of beneficence to focus on promoting good for my clients
(Freeman, 2005). Nonmaleficence means doing no evil or harm either by commission as well as omission.
The Principle Of Justice In The ACA Code
Certain actions may be appropriate for certain situations, yet not for others. As a professional, the principle of nonmaleficence
beckons me to be very careful and vigilant and to develop an awareness and sensitivity to the individuals and situations they face.
The principle of autonomy requires me as a professional not to impose my will on myclient rather, to respect my client’s right to
make their own decisions on certain issues. In other words, it entails patient’s rights to privacy, confidentiality, and self-
determination (APA, 2017).

The principle of justice in the ACA code requires that as a professional, l treat my clients equally not considering their age, gender,
race, socioeconomic status, or ethnicity. In other words, there should be reasonable judgment on my part devoid of biases and
unjust practices (APA, 2017). Fidelity as a principle in the APA and ACA code requires that l build trust, confidence with my clients
by way of honoring and keeping promises. This will indeed go a long way to build a strong and reliable relationship with my clients
(ACA, 2014).
