Then, in a 1- to 2-page, double-spaced paper, respond to the following prompts:
The questions asked by leaders are often different from those asked by followers. Thinking of yourself in the role of leadership in a church or ministry setting, what is your responsibility in speaking “the things which are fitting for sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1)?
How might the creeds of the church function as guidelines to help you in this task?
Answer each of the prompts thoroughly, being sure to appropriately cite any sources in MLA format
Examine the claim that one can have no creed but the Bible. Consider the regulative function which creeds provide. Reflect on what fulfills the regulative function in the absence of the creeds. No Creed but the Bible? There are a number of churches and denominations which claim that they are noncreedal, some with phrases like no creed but the Bible, or no creed but Christ. The idea behind these statements is to assert that what one follows is not the words of men, but the Word of God. The desire to base ones faith solely on the Bible is commendable, but the idea that somehow we can do so without any sort of statement of what we believe the Bible teaches is self-deceptive. A creed is simply a statement of what one believes (a doctrinal statement). In a very reduced form, the statement, no creed but the Bible is really a creed itself. But leaving the logical contradiction aside for a moment, is it even possible to have no creed but the Bible? The Death of Truth The question is not so much what the Bible says as what it means. As just one example, there were people in the second century (known as Gnostics) who read the first chapters of Genesis and agreed that it speaks of a creator who fashioned humans, that there was a tree which the first couple were forbidden to eat, and that a serpent told the woman to eat of the fruit, and that she did. However, the Gnostics considered the creator to be evil, and they said that in creating humans he imprisoned their spirits in bodies (which are also evil), and that the serpent is the hero of the story, since he told the woman the way she could free herselfby eating the fruit. When she did, the Gnostics say, she was saved. I imagine and hope that the Gnostic understanding of Genesis is appalling to you! But heres the key question: how do you know its the wrong way to understand Genesis? It isnt the particulars of the story that are the issue, it is the framework into which those particulars fit that we need to consider. And while the Gnostic reading of Genesis is a particularly perverse example of misreading Scripture, similar issues arise about whether Jesus is truly fully God, whether he is fully human, whether his death was necessary to atone for sin, and many other issues which bear directly on our understanding of God and our relationship with him. People use Scripture to argue both for and against each of these positions. What can guide us in understanding the Bible? If we have no statement of belief (i.e., no creed) that helps us figure out how to put the pieces together, then where are we? It is because the Scriptures can be distorted that something like a creed is an important tool in helping us to understand the Bible. We might call it a Christian worldview, or a doctrinal statement, but THE 105 Prelude to Biblical and Theological Studies whatever we call it, we all use some sort of framework of belief for our interpretation of the Bible. If we dont then biblical interpretation becomes radically subjective and truth dies.
