SYO 3400 American Health Care System Paper
In this post, I am asking you to integrate what you’ve learned by focusing on the current American health insurance system.
Start your post with these two sentences.
In 1910, people who received care from physicians or in hospitals either paid for it on their own or, if they were poor and fortunate, received charity. By 2010, decades after the epidemiological transition, the entire system had changed radically but the US still had big problems in its system for financing and delivering healthcare.
Then, do the following:
PART ONE
Identify at least four major problems that had developed by 2010 in the American system of health insurance and healthcare, drawing on what you learned in modules nine, ten and eleven. Pick these problems thoughtfully, as you are going to need to write about them in part two of this post.
You learned a lot about a broad range of different kinds of problems in the textbook, my lectures, and the documentary. Stop and think. Pick four of the biggest problems that had developed by 2010. [HINT: Sicko was made in 2007, so it is a good source.]
Be sure to explain (a) what the problem was and (b) why it had developed.
Be sure that you explain why it should be considered a major problem.
Important: Be sure to draw on at least one assignment from module eleven in this section of the post. You need to think about the problems identified in Module 11.
PART TWO: How successful has the ACA been in dealing with these problems?
Explain the way in which the ACA attempted to deal with these problems. If the ACA avoided/dodged or was blocked from tacking one or more of the problems you identified, explain why.
To do this, you will need to show me that you understand what the ACA was and how it attempted to change American healthcare.
Reminder: the ACA affected both private and public healthcare insurance. Be sure to discuss both of them.
In this section of the post, be sure to write about the four problems that you identified in the first part of the post. If the ACA has addressed all of them, explain what it did to address them and assess its degree of success in dealing with them. To be sure that you reflect on oversights/failures in the ACA, though, you must write about at least one important problem that it has not been able to solve.
In areas in which the ACA has been successful, explain what it has managed to do.
In areas in which the ACA has been unable to resolve a major problem, so say and explain why.
Conclude by developing your personal position on how healthcare should be financed and delivered in the United States.
“Developing your personal position” = (1) stating what you think that a healthcare system should be and do. You could develop your own criteria or you could use criteria like those used by the Commonwealth Fund or those laid out in “evaluating health care systems” in Chapter 9; (2) explaining why/how the system that you prefer would accomplish these go
