We learned that sex is biological and gender is cultural. We listened to an NPR program that introduced us to two families with boys who were born identifying as girls. From the minute they could speak, they told their parents they were girls. However, the social norms and values ascribed these girls as boys due to their biology. As parents generally want what is best for their children, both families sought out help. One family was encouraged to accept their child as a daughter whereas the other family were discouraged from accepting the child as a girl.
Assignment
Compare the two families on 3 ways they interact with their child differently and 3 consequences of how their child is doing in society – specifically their happiness and interactions with other children. I recommend using a table as it is one way to ensure you are comparing these families on each item.
