SOC 3321 American Middle Class Population Discussion
Think about how you can contribute some substantive arguments to the discussion that goes beyond what has been already said and stated in the class materials – contextualizing and critically evaluating the issues. Consider questions like: Why are we seeing particular
patterns? What could be contributing to the issues beyond the information presented in the readings and videos? What are the consequences of the observed patterns/phenomena?
What does it mean for particular forms or groups of families? What does this mean for certain groups in our society? Can something be done about this – could policies or programs improve the issues? What did the authors (readings, videos) fail to consider? Etc.,
Questions like these demonstrate critical thinking and will most definitively add substance to your posts.
Your post should be clear and well thought out.
You can use examples from your personal experience to illustrate your thoughts but do not just recount things you heard or experienced, rather apply those experiences to make your arguments.
Responses must also be substantive. Please do not just repeat what someone else stated, just cheer on your fellow students, or just add a personal anecdote. Do all of the above if you wish but add some substantive arguments to gain maximum points.

In this week’s readings, l felt very touched by the readings on single mothers. I found it so inspiring that regardless of single mothers’ risks of falling into poverty, they still viewed their children as their save and grace. I think of my sister, who is a single mother. Instead of focusing on all the things she struggles or misses out on, but instead she worries about being the best mother that she possibly can. Sometimes being privileged makes us forget just how rich the small things in life make us. Though, this doesn’t change the fact that these women should be getting the help they deserve. They shouldn’t have to be working 60+ hours a week, to make ends meet. Especially since children are also extremely affected by this. They should be able to spend time together, not feel like strangers.
Another thing I learned, was just how easily poverty could be solved with some charity. It amazes me that one person is allowed to have enough money to completely resolves America’s poverty. Why? This is so much more money than one person could be able to spend in a lifetime? This makes no sense. The greed is incredible, and sadly very romanticized in America. Why do we share lives on media that aren’t even attainable? I just hope that in the future things will change. Someone will decide this makes no sense. That life and adventure and happiness shouldn’t be this hard to attain. I thing a big part of that will start with charity.

I was shocked as I read about $2 a day poverty. It is hard to understand how there can be so many people living in poverty when we live in a country with so much wealth. It was surprising to see that the US had such a high rate of child poverty compared to so many other countries. It was so interesting to read that many poor unwed mothers feel that their child saved them and gave them purpose and focus in life. I think that is actually really amazing. I
t would seem more logical to me that the stress of raising and providing for a child by myself would be overwhelming; but they choose life and family and find purpose in that. I applaud that. All life is important and I would never have chosen to not have one of my children, even if I was living in extreme poverty. But the question is begged: is this fair to the child, the family, the society?
And what part should the government play in providing support and relief to families and children living in poverty. It seems that drugs/alcohol have much to do with who lives in poverty and that is a choice. But abuse also seems to be a major player in poverty and that isn’t by the victim’s choice.
As I watched the two videos it was hard to believe that poverty is growing so much in the suburbs. But I can see how challenging it is to keep up with the growing housing prices and inflation in general. It seems that when people get in a money/poverty crisis, it is hard to leave the area you are living to make a new start. That was made obvious by the man that had to travel 4 hour each way to a job that didn’t pay too much. I wish there was an easy way to take care of the poverty challenge we have in our country and around the world and to “share the wealth.”
