What do you think of Roger’s seven-stage model of change? What strengths and limitations does this model have? How might this model be utilized in cross-cultural counseling situations?

Roger’s seven stage model of change is a great way to observe where one’s client is at in the therapeutic process and take note of their progress. I appreciate that it’s a growth model and gives hope for the future, rather than just presuming that a person perceives the world through one single lens, it gives hope that one’s entire perception of themselves and their world can develop through the stages and come to a place of awareness and ownership of self. One of the limitations I perceive is that it is a very general and idealized way of conceptualizing the therapeutic process.
Each individual experiences therapy differently, comes to therapy with different concerns, and can terminate therapy whenever they feel they have accomplished what they needed, regardless of whether or not they have reached the seventh stage. The actual application of the seven stages needs to be personalized for each client and understood through their own individualized lens. Another one of limitations I perceive is the lack of consideration for cultural differences. For example, certain cultures do not appreciate or condone the full expression of one’s emotions.
The higher stages of “expressions and feelings” which indicate flowing emotional expression, may be stages that certain cultures are not comfortable ever getting to, however the same individual may be the higher stages in other areas such as the “perception of problems” which includes more cognitive elements rather than emotional. I think each area and stage needs to be understood and conceptualized through the culture and personal experiences of each individual.
- The seven stage model sounds like rapport. The counselor has successfully established. relationship with the client that enable the client to go from being hesitant and reserved to open and honest. I think the expectation that the client should be open from the beginning of therapy because they made the chose to come to therapy is an ideal situation and perhaps this happens often. The seven stage model sounds like description of what anyone who is new to therapy experiences. My experience was bit different. I walked in and laid it all out and was like how do we fix this, don’t tell me im right because I am wrong on some things, give me what you got. I don’t know if that is a therapist worst nightmare or ideal situation but that depends on the type of therapist you get. The strengths of this model is perhaps that it describes a large majority of people who come to therapy. The limitation of this model is expecting the client to be this way. It can be rigid and therefore make the interaction with the counselor almost inauthentic. I think that this model perhaps describes how people within the black, asian, and latin culture respond to therapy. Given the stigmas surrounding therapy in these communities, reading it felt familiar to how people in my culture react to strangers. Is this the foundation of human interaction/friendships? In some cultures, specifically black, you have to be trusted before we can share with you. We have to feel that you can understand where we are coming from in order to get more information out as the model suggest. Unfortunately, the moment that the counselor does not, you may very well lose the client. In order for it to be effective the counselor must understand the culture of the client-the do’s and don’ts, when to push those boundaries, and when to lay off. This may sound and be way off base without explanation, but the way the voice in my head sees it is you have to know how to play the game when no games are being played.
