HSA5200 Healthcare Reform Proposal
Scenario
In terms of health reform, the United States continues to face difficulties. Although there is broad agreement on the need for health reform, there is a significant gap in opinion on how to best achieve it. The repeal of current legislation (the ACA), the introduction of a universal plan, and other fixes to the ACA are all being discussed as reform strategies. Many people believe that repealing the present system is the best option, while others believe that efforts to fix the current ACA are the best option. The health organization for which you work has requested you to create a comprehensive healthcare reform proposal.
The United States spends more of its GDP on healthcare than any other developed country. However, as compared to other countries, the higher level of investment has not resulted in better outcomes. Aside from increased prices, the United States is the only developed country that does not provide universal health care to its population. There has been a lot of discussion on the benefits and drawbacks of universal coverage. Those who oppose universal coverage frequently point to Canada’s single-payer system and its problems, which include high tax burdens for citizens, long wait times, and the perception of single-payer as socialized medicine. Those in support of universal coverage, on the other hand, believe that the single payer system is not socialized medicine and that it is more cost effective than the current system in the United States. Furthermore, single payer is just one type of universal coverage. Rather than a single-payer system, countries that consistently rank high in terms of favorable health outcomes frequently use a multi-payer universal system.
