Hello Professor and Class,
The three job titles that are in line with my degree in Health Sciences and national certification are Epidemiologist, Health Scientist, and Environmental Health Specialist (CDC, 2021). All three are related to the
career path that I would like to pursue once I retire from the U.S. Army. Out of the three that I have chosen, I believe I am most qualified as an Epidemiologist because I have experience with program planning
and management in the public health field. I also know how to advise organizations on the current public health threats and how to mitigate those risks.
Searching for a job will not be easy because I will be new to civilian life and the struggle of translating my military career experience into my resume. However, I do know that the federal government has jobs that
spike my interest so I will start with searching on USAJOBS.gov.
I believe that employers want me to outline my experience in the field of epidemiology, management, and planning. I will have to outline the positions I have held along with the specific duty descriptions. In
addition to having a degree in Health Sciences, I believe I can be more competitive with certifications in Public Health, Environmental Health, and Preventive Medicine. Finally, obtaining a graduate-level degree
will set me aside from the rest of the applicants.

This was a great discussion to get me looking into what I could do with a Bachelor of Health Science degree. Truthfully, I never really investigated it because I knew I was going to move on to my get my master’s
degree in School Psychology. Looking at what I could do with a Bachelor of Health Science degree is a wide variety. For instance, I could become a medical and health services manager, a claims reviewer, and
medical equipment and pharmaceutical sales representative.
The following three jobs I found on Indeed:
Medical Claims Examiner- one of the jobs that popped up for this was Manager Community Health Services. The qualification included a bachelor’s degree or an RN degree. According to Indeed (2021) the
description of the job includes:
Recruits and supervises staff.
Directs and participates in the development, interpretation, evaluation, and recommendation of policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Plans and coordinates outreach, supervises individual activities, assesses training needs, and provides training as needed.
Facilitates case conferencing with team to discuss client cases and provide mutual support.
Works with department management to continuously evaluate referral and follow-up process, identifies problems, and proposes process improvement strategies.
Disability Claims Manager- The qualifications include a Bachelor of Health Science degree along with 2-7 years’ experience in Claims. Some of the job descriptions include:
Will effectively and accurately manage a block of Disability and / or Absence claims
Focus on customer experience to deliver the best experience for our customers
Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate, dependable, and trustworthy service to our customers.
A strong customer focus evidenced through maintaining customer relationships.
Manage assigned caseload of more complex FMLA and integrated FMLA and Disability cases
Evaluate claimant eligibility.
Interact with internal and external customers including, but not limited to, claimants, employers, physicians, and attorneys etc., to gather the information to make the decision on the claim.
Medical Sales Representative- The qualifications for this include a bachelor’s degree, along with 3-5 years of sale experience. Some of the job duties include:
As part of our sales team, you will introduce our home sleep testing service to medical practices in the area surrounding your home city. Your typical month will include educational sales presentations, in
addition to providing regular communication and support to all accounts in your territory. Experience with scheduling lunch & learns and conducting virtual presentations is preferred.
Looking at these jobs descriptions I would think I am most qualified for the medical examiner. With already being in healthcare and now earning my bachelor’s degree I feel as if this would be a good fit for me.
For all these jobs I believe employers want to see experience. I have noticed that in most descriptions they all have experience needed. Which in my opinion can be hard for a new graduate because we have no
experience to bring to the table at first. I think they would also be looking at a strong and organized resume, one that shows professionalism. I have also noticed that jobs in the claims department want certain
certification as well, whether it be billing and coding certificates or ICD code certificates.
