I was just examining the Manufacturing Industry Results from a UBA Health Plan Survey that was recently issued (2008). There’s a lot of knowledge out there, and the last thing most of us need is more, so I’m not going to give you anything you can’t obtain elsewhere. Instead, I intended to provide manufacturing organizations a fast overview of current trends and what they can do to address them.
Here are a handful of the more intriguing findings from this research:
- Manufacturing companies have nearly twice as many employees covered by Consumer Driven Healthcare plans as the national average.
- There is also a significant difference in this region between firms with fewer than 200 workers and those with more than 200 employees (employers with more than 200 employees have more than double the number of employees enrolled in CDHP plans).
One of the main reasons for this is that larger organizations have learnt how to communicate more effectively with their employee population, and hence implement cost-cutting techniques more frequently than smaller ones.
You’d think this would result in reduced prices, but the savings appear to be offset by the fact that these larger firms tend to enroll far more dependents in their plans since they charge less for dependent coverage, driving up their overall cost per employee.
The interpretation and judgments about what you (as an employer) should do next are the REAL power of any data collection. Following my analysis of the survey findings, I feel that the main potential for manufacturing companies is to:
- Take advantage of insurance carriers’ preference for CDHP plans in terms of cost.
- Take advantage of a workforce that is (usually) easy to approach because the bulk of employees are concentrated in a central location.
- Leverage communication efforts to this concentrated workforce, keeping in mind that we now have four generations in the workforce for the first time in history.
- Finally, encourage your employees to participate in specific employee wellness and illness management programs.
