Firstly, the Electoral College is a process, not a place, and the founders who brought forward the idea intended to create a compromise between citizens, who were qualified, and by electoral votes in Congress. Popular vote refers to a direct election where the people of a nation can choose political officeholders and for the political party in which they desire.
When we vote for our preferred presidential candidate, we are actually voting for an elector who will represent our vote, and these people will pledge their vote to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote in their state. In my humble opinion, I believe that popular vote should be primarily used to determine the outcome of an election due to respecting both the needs and wants of the people.
On the other hand, many people believe that giving the people that much power would cause a tyranny. Voter turnout should be 100% but not everyone is informed about the impact that each vote may have but plenty of people think that since electoral votes are worth more than theirs, that there is no purpose in voting.
With the “winner takes all system” a favored nominee will be selected despite the groups of people who voted against this. The “powers of the powerless” works greatly to combat this occurrence, where ordinary citizens can make small moral commitments without provoking intolerable costs.
Having an Electoral College certainly limits democracy by putting a giant filter on the words of many citizens who oppose the ideas presented. They will have to abide by the rules, or nominated president, made by Congress and will unfortunately have to deal with it. Lastly, the Electoral college will surely be used in the 2020 election and I am personally hoping that Congress can make a decision that we can all agree upon.
