People got tired of the era before, and when the 1800 emerged, they turned away to mystery…feeling…emotions in the 19th century. Beethoven is a good example because psychologically, he gets you ways to lure you to his music. Important: Discovery of the unconscious. During the 18th century, people looked upon during the age of reason. The Unconscious was being discovered. According to 19th modern society. The human mind was divided in two categories. Subconscious and unconscious. Unconscious emerges in dreams a lot. Technology and science have driven so many aspects of our culture. All kinds of revolutionary breakthoughs. Electricty…airplanes…moving pictures…automobiles… This is the modern world that we know today. Whenever we had dramatic changes it had a big impact on human lives on emotions and values. Before that time things were pretty much the change. (light candle, ride horses) but now it’s more advanced. Point is: big impact on human emotion, and whenever that impact occurs it changes humanities and its projection about how people feel about their lives. Rapid changes in technology. Social religious of values in peoples lives. It wasn’t the cozy religion of the past. – all characteristics. Another characteristic is discontinuity (things don’t go together) In the world of Shakespeare, things went together. This century however, things are dying out. Primitivism, there was an antidote to civilization. Africa, Central Asia… Estrangement means things look weird! Alienation is when we feel cut off from people. The unconscious. Plays a big role (a huge aspect from economics to psychology to literature, a new understanding of human nature) The dominant clip that holds all of this together is the traditional beliefs and values of science & technology, today…people got used to that. We are used to technology, because we are born with it. Characteristics look different from the past and the 20th century. Due to the psychology being alive involves alienation, estrangement, anxiety… Picasso was born in Spain. 1888sh. Went to france (now the capital of humanities in the period of 1900-to the outbreak of WWll) Music, lifestyle, fashion, painting, literature. Wasn’t just the French that created these things, but famous people throughout Europe that made this happen like Picasso. “Les Domoiselles d’Auguon” 1907 first modern painting by Picasso. Most people preferred old school paintings and disliked Modern more. Although technology intrigues us. (Street in Barcelona full of prostitutes) Domoiselles mean beautiful young girl. 20th century a lot of artists dismantled 3d, take it apart (Flat). Artists wants us to focus on the shape over the distance to the picture. Primitisim = as European culture get more and more sophisticated (civilized) there was an interest in the primitive. People were very irrational and looked that way. Things got more civilized, Picasso collected masks. Ambivalent attitude (Picasso) towards women and had over 75 girlfriends. Because they tend to be consuming, distractive, attention etc. The painting above the women look like sex objects with masks. This is how dreams tend to be for us. (The unconscious appeal) Facet means a face, like a diamond ring cut into difference facets. The women in the painting subliminally are dangerous. The shapes suggest knives and cutting. Subliminally, people have a shutter between nudity & knives. This is the subliminal unconscious meaning of the picture. Igor Stravinsky, “Rite of Spring” 1913 Rite means ritual. Franz Kafka. This writer wrote novels/short stories involving people undergoing through threats/being chased (don’t know why. Committed crime perhaps?) “The Metamorphosis” -1914, a lot of whats important in the humanities happens in the first 25 years of the 20th century. The Metamorphosis is the name that we give when an insect changes into a butterfly. (Fancy word for change) In this short story, the guy wakes up and turns into a bug. Kafka shows us how reality can be totally unpredictable and discontinuous.
