Part 1Kotter’s 8-step change process is a way for leaders and organizations to observe and evlaute how they are implementing change. Though not all steps may be used by all organizations, change occurs in a cycle that is similar to what Dr. Kotter models. The cycle can be found in the image below.(Kotter, Inc., 2022).One skill that I want to demonstrate and strengthen as a leader is active listening. The reason why I want to strengthen my active listening skills is because it can benefit my relationships building and strategic thinking strengths and can ultimately differentiate my leadership dynamic from other leaders. This reasoning creates my sense of urgency to change, and the urge is followed by my course of action, which would be to join courses on active listening and/ or seminars on the subject. After doing that, I would form goals and an implementation plan to implement the information that I am learning on how to become a better listener. One barrier to listening is often noise, so I would intentionally engage in more rich channels of communication to promote my active listening while also implementing small pieces of suggestions that I hear my team would like to see. Lastly, I wouldn’t end the continuance of further communication courses but instead, invest in a life-long dedication to enhancing my active listening.Another example of how the 8-step change process can be modeled to acquire a skill can be seen through public speaking. As much as I perform public speaking, there are always far more changes to be made in how I communicate to others and with others. At this point, urgency is established, and coalitions can be found within groups such as Toastmasters, courses such as effective communication, and behavioral courses such as interpersonal behavior. The strategic vision for me would be to be able to communicate with and understand anyone that I am talking to and be able to flex my communication style. This would promote the enabling of pushing myself out of my comfort zone and being more conscious of small, non-verbal cues. From the continued practice of public speaking and communication, eventually, I would see results and be able to progress as I continue to push myself in the coalition actions.Change is going to occur no matter where we are. As leaders, there are several ways that we can reduce the resistance to change In our environments.
