The Bretton Woods system was a system of international monetary management established by the Bretton Woods Agreement in 1944 at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The agreement was signed by 44 countries and went into effect in 1945.
The Bretton Woods system was a fixed exchange rate system, which meant that the value of each currency was pegged to the value of gold.
