According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 38 million people in the United States still smoke. Cigarette smoking was most prevalent among males aged 25 to 64. Since 1964, each pack of cigarettes has included a warning that smoking is harmful to one’s health and can cause cancer or contribute to other disorders. Despite this, 480,000 Americans will die as a result of smoking this year (CDC 2020). This amount is astonishingly high, surpassing the total number of wartime casualties experienced by the US military in WWII, which totaled 405,399 soldiers (Green, 2017). Thirty people live with a smoke-related ailment for every smoker who dies. Nonetheless, 15.5 percent of Americans aged 18 and under develop the habit. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the cigarette and smokeless tobacco industry spent more than $9 billion on advertising and promotion in the United States in 2018. The question is: how do commercials persuade us to do things that we all know are detrimental for our health? More specifically, how do businesses deceive us with data in order to persuade us to buy their product?
