What exactly does it imply to be “exceptional”? Although one well-known definition of the term is excellent, it has also come to be used to describe people who learn in a variety of ways. Some children take a unique path as a result of cognitive, physical, or psychological factors that they, their peers, and their families may never fully comprehend. Andrew Solomon chronicled his journey with more than 300 families in his book Far From the Tree, in which he worked alongside them to better understand the supports required for some children to not only survive but thrive (Solomon, 2012). What might some children require you to do differently as they learn language and literacy as they embark on a unique journey? How do we go from “He can’t learn this” to “He just hasn’t learned it yet” or “How can I explain this to him in a different way so he can understand it?”
You will investigate the effects of exceptionalities on language and literacy development in this Discussion. You also conduct research to learn more about a particular exceptionality. Consider your own experiences working with or living with young children whose lives are impacted by cognitive, physical, and/or psychological factors as you approach this Discussion.

Share how this information might affect your practice (as well as the practices of others in the field) in supporting healthy language development and learning in a 100-word response.
Share and describe an organization and/or additional resource that may assist and guide early childhood professionals and educators working with kindergarteners, primary school-aged children, and/or their families in a 100-word response.
