The overall theme of today’s readings is how our social network ties and group memberships help us live better lives.
How does having a diverse set of network ties provide advantages, according to the reading “Social Networks: The Value of Variety?” At least two specific examples from the reading should be given.
Why is it that most people find jobs through weak ties rather than strong ties?
In what ways do friendships benefit one’s health? What is the author’s explanation for these potential enhancements? That is, why might having a wider range of contacts be beneficial to our health?
Consider the positive aspects of how group memberships and network ties influence individual behavior after reading the blog post on positive peer pressure. Give an example of positive peer pressure that you’ve personally experienced (as someone who has been influenced or as someone who has influenced someone else), or that you’ve witnessed firsthand, or that you’ve learned about from the news, television, or a movie. Why do you think the individual was swayed by peer pressure?
Is there any evidence that certain types of groups (e.g., primary groups, secondary groups, in-groups, out-groups, reference groups) have a positive impact on an individual’s behavior?
Discuss one or two social factors that can lead to social poverty after reading “Social Poverty and Relational Resources.”
Then, talk about one or two social policies or programs that could help to alleviate social inequity. Note that rather than individual-level strategies, the policies/programs you discuss should be collective strategies, such as policy solutions or community programs.
