1.) Considering the social determinants of heath, commercial free initiatives may have an impact on marketing building in schools because removing advertisements by fast food chains, children will not be influenced to consume their products.
In the TEDx talk, “Marking food to children,” by Lappe, she discusses how major brands use sponsored academic activities to advertise their business. As a result, children are seeing brands support their academic performance and achievements which create a desire for their products to be consumed.
While considering social determinants of health, banning or limited commercials will have a positive impact on children and teens because they will not be exposed to adverts. In contrast, while commercial free initiatives in an academic environment is positive, children and teens are at risk of being exposed to advertisements through other means outside of school.

2.) Hunger and food insecurity should be addressed in the public and civic sector because food insecurity is influenced by the economy. Food insecurity is influenced by numerous factors such as income, employment, race, disability, and geographical location. Low-income households and disabled individuals experience food insecurity because job opportunities are limited and the cost of food exceeds their income.
Additionally, individuals or families that live in rural areas my not physically have access to food or full-service supermarkets. Convenience stores are more common in these areas and may lack the nutritious food that people need. If food security was addressed as a public / civic responsibility people would be more educated and driven to bring awareness and aid to people in need.

As a society, we can ensure the elderly stay safe by encouraging our older family members to maintain an active lifestyle, have a nutrient balance diet, take supplements when needed, and take preventative measure when necessary. As people age, health concern arises and dietary changes need to be made. Having a well-balanced nutritious diet is essential and imperative for elderly individuals with underlying health conditions or concerns.
If an individual is on a medication course of therapy for health conditions, being aware of the drug interactions and side effects is beneficial to maintain their health. Murrell, D. Question: Considering the social determinants of health, do you think a commercial free initiative will change marketing building in the schools?
The simple answer is of course a commercial free initiative will change marketing building in schools. If you prevent companies from being able to market their product on one front then those companies will try and find a different route with which to market their product. However, I think Anna Lappe has missed the primary source of a poor diet when it comes to children.
The one paying for the junk food is, of course, parents and guardians. Perhaps a better technique to fight health problems in children would not be to fight commercialism in schools, but to educate parents and guardians on nutrition and responsibility. Question: Who should be responsible for addressing hunger and food insecurity? (Private, public or civic responsibility)
When it comes to hunger and the feeling of insecurity regarding where your next meal is coming from, I believe we should look at the cultures and societies that have the least problems in regards to these issues. Capitalism has produced an abundance the likes this world has never seen throughout history.
When companies fight for their customers attention, competition becomes the most powerful way to reduce prices and create better products. And with better products being sold for a cheaper price, more people have access to food, shelter, and medical supplies. Privatizing the food industry is not a perfect solution, but I do not believe a perfect solution can be attained. Humans are humans after all.
Question: What can we as a society do to assure older adults stay healthy?
Keeping the elderly healthy is a difficult problem. I think the answer lies in education, though that education would need to be attractive to the elderly, or to those caring for the elderly. We go through the early stages of our life swimming in education. Preschool leads to kindergarten lead to elementary school leads to middle-school leads to high school leads to college. By the time we are 22 years old a major percentage of our lives has been spent inside of a classroom.
Then most of us move on from school and get a job. We do that job, with little further education challenging our minds, until we retire. Then in retirement there is even less challenging our minds.
This drop in education as we age means the older, we get the less we are aware of up-to-date health habits. I believe the way to counteract this would be to create education programs for the elderly. Attract older people to enroll themselves in programs that will keep their mind sharp, and keep them informed on the subject of good health.
