The image above is a North Korean propaganda piece. This appears to be a simple graphic at first look, yet it is rich with messages about North Korea and its people. Analyze the work and explain what you’re trying to say. How does it accomplish this? Make sure you’re detailed and specific.

Classmate’s comment: This art effectively communicates the idea that everyone in North Korea should be happy. The residents of North Korea are given this expectation that they feel obligated to meet to create this image of happiness. The portrayal of these children being happy in this great location instilled in working people the belief that they, too, should be happy despite their appalling working conditions. In actuality, the majority of the population struggled due to their working conditions and hours, while a small percentage of the population had it easier. People would be content and have no expectations of their society improving if they were given the image of a great location. People would protest and rebel if they were unhappy with their lives. Protesting or challenging the government was forbidden regardless of the citizen’s social standing. People were less likely to revolt or rebel against the government because of the social realist style. The purpose of this picture was to keep people from realizing how much power their government had over them and how bad their lives were. People were constantly fed art that made them believe they lived in an ideal society, so they never questioned their rulers’ authority. By depicting two cheerful youngsters signing while dressed in military uniforms, this artwork conveys the expectation of happiness. They were dressed in military uniforms to express support for North Korea’s armed forces, as well as showing how happy they were with where they live.
Part 2: You learned about conceptual art in this week’s lecture, and we briefly reviewed the work presented below. An antique bronze Buddha is featured in Paik Nam June’s TV Buddha installation (not made by Paik). The Buddha statue is positioned in front of a television, which is set up opposite the statue and broadcasts CC video of the Buddha.
