Diversity has a significant influence on health care. Studying transcultural health care helps health professionals understand different cultures in order to provide holistic and individualized health care. Read and reflect on “The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence” (Purnell, 2005) including the theory, framework, and 12 domains. The United States Census Bureau identifies four major subcultural ethnic groups in this country. Choose one of the following ethnic groups to focus your paper: o Hispanic/Latino (of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, and other Latin descents) o Black/African American (of African, Haitian, and Dominican Republic descents) o Asian/Pacific Islander (of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, Hawaiian, Guamanian, Samoan, and Asian Indian descents) o American Indian/ Alaska Native (descendants of hundreds of tribes of Native Americans and of Eskimo descent)
Write an essay paper that explores the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence. Include the following: 1) Briefly explain the purpose and framework of the Purnell Model in your own words (1-2 paragraphs). This explanation should allow someone who is not aware of the Purnell Model to understand the context of your paper. Identify the subgroup chosen to analyze. 2) Based on your research of the selected subcultural ethnic group, identify at least 6 of the 12 domains of culture from the Purnell Model that you consider important when educating individuals in the selected subgroup. Provide an assessment of the cultural attributes of the 6 domains you identify as important (Discuss characteristics of the group). Indicate the reason or rationale for the 6 domains of culture you chose. 3) Based on what you have learned about the selected group, what teaching strategies are most appropriate for this group? 4) Conclude your paper with how your acquired knowledge and application of the Purnell Model to your selected subgroup will affect the way you provide education to this ethnic subgroup.
