Letter to a child:
Donovan has been a single parent to his 18-year-old son for the past five years. Donovan and his son have had some ups and downs in an otherwise good relationship, but
nothing Donovan sees as abnormal, “things that happen in any family”, he notes.
Parenting Styles and Marriages Questions
During the second semester of senior year, Donovan’s son started having difficulties getting
himself to classes and submitting his assignments on time. When he initially approached his son about this observation, he assured Donovan that all second semester
seniors take it easy and there was no real harm since he had already secured his college acceptance. In recent weeks, Donovan has also noticed his son staying out with
friends until late hours and has found empty beer cans in the recycling. Most recently, Donovan tried to broach the topic of drinking with his son. Although he seems generally
uninterested in the topic, telling Donovan “everything is ok”, he admits that he and his friends sometimes party on weekends. Donovan is unsure whether to be concerned and
seeks consultation from a local psychologist (you).
